What Is a Shower Waterproofing Membrane?
A shower waterproofing membrane is a protective layer installed beneath tiles to stop water from penetrating the wall and floor structure.
Showers are one of the wettest areas in a home, so this barrier is essential for preventing leaks, mould, water damage, and premature structural deterioration.
Modern, liquid-applied waterproofing membranes create a barrier across shower floors, walls, corners, and penetrations. These systems provide long-term protection while supporting compliance with Australian waterproofing requirements.

It bonds to ceramic tile, marble, stone and concrete, leaves an anti-slip surface for wet environments, and is surface dry in about five hours and water ready in 24. PM-21 Repair Primer
The two-component primer that goes down first. It penetrates and seals porous concrete, cement and mortar, resists efflorescence, and is touch dry in about an hour. Concrete needs a minimum of 25 days drying and render a minimum of 5 before it goes on. View PM-21
R2T-S7 Tile Adhesive and P97 / P98 Polyurea Grout
R2T-S7 is a flexible two-part polyaspartic polyurea tile adhesive that absorbs thermal movement and resists hollowing and cracking. How a Shower Waterproofing System Goes Together
A shower is not waterproofed by one product. It is a sequence, and skipping a step is where most failures start.

Check the substrate is ready. Concrete needs a minimum of 25 days drying and render a minimum of 5 days. The surface has to be clean and free of dust, dirt, mould, grease and oil.

Prime with PM-21 across the full substrate, including all joints, corners and angles.
- •
Detail the wet spots first. Apply SH-502 to every joint, corner and angle before coating the broader floor and wall area.
- •
Coat the floor, walls, corners and penetrations evenly at the recommended coverage rate.
- •
Inspect the membrane once dry and before tiling, and apply an additional coat where cover is thin.
- •
Tile with R2T-S7 flexible adhesive, then grout with P97 or P98 once the tiles are fixed and the mortar has stabilised, generally a week later.
Waterproofing a Shower Over Existing Tiles
Renovations and leak repairs do not always justify stripping a bathroom back to the substrate. Where the existing tiles are sound and firmly bonded, WP-16 is applied straight over them: clean the tile surface, fill gaps, holes and pipe roots, polish and clean the surface, apply the interface agent, then brush on the coating. It cures anti-slip, which matters on a shower floor.
What it will not do is fix a failed substrate. If tiles are drummy or cracked, or the leak has already reached the framing, the honest answer is a full strip-out and a new membrane underneath. Our guide to wet area waterproofing covers how to tell the difference.
